o Boston-based GrabCAD Raises $1.1 Million
Boston – GrabCAD, the Boston-based provider of a services
marketplace that connects manufacturing and product development companies
with CAD engineers, announced it has raised $1.1 million in a deal with
participation from Matrix Partners, Atlas Venture and NextView
Ventures, as well as four individual angel investors. The company said
it has tripled the number of engineers who have signed up with its service
in the last month. GrabCAD has development teams in Estonia and Brazil.

o Marlborough-based Spectra Analysis Raises $900K in Equity
Marlborough, Mass. -- Spectra Analysis, a Marlborough-based developer
of molecular analysis instrument, has raised about $900,000 in private
capital according to a new filing by the company with the Securities and
Exchange Commission. Founded in 2004, Spectra Analysis makes instruments
that are used for analysis of complex mixtures in a broad range of
applications. The company’s SEC filing indicates it plans to raise a total
of $3 million in its current round of funding.

o Twitter Launches Auto Link-Shortening Feature
San Francisco -- Popular microblogging service Twitter has launched
its own in-house URL shortening service, which will automatically shorten
links pasted by users when tweeting to 19 characters. The t.co link
shortener also will inform users how many of their 140 characters remain
with the shortened link added. Twitter said in a blog post that the new
feature "increases security." "Since we show a shortened version of the
original link, people will know which site the link points to," the company
wrote. "If users click links that are reported as malicious, we direct them
to a page that warns them."

o Mid-Year Report: M&A Activity Continues Momentum, Deal Values Rise
New York - Merger and acquisition activity in the U.S. continued its recent
momentum during the first half of this year, according to a new report from
PricewaterhouseCoopers. There were 1,276 announced transactions with
a total value of $454 billion during the first five months of 2011, up 39%
in terms of value from the same period a year ago. While deal volume
declined slightly (in part due to a lag time in reporting deals), the
average deal size increased 45% percent to $356 million. “As expected, the
favorable conditions that escalated through the end of 2010 and drove the
pickup in M&A activity carried through in the first five months of 2011,”
said Martyn Curragh, U.S. transaction services leader with PwC. “An increase
in total deal value in the last twelve months ending May 2011 indicates a
sustained M&A cycle, and as confidence continues to build, markets stabilize
and businesses look towards growth, we expect the acceleration of the M&A
market to continue in the second half of 2011.”
