o OneShield Raises $6 Million in Third Round
Walpole, Mass. -- Three previous investors in Walpole-based OneShield, a
provider of technology that automates the sale of insurance and financial
services, have joined together in a third round of venture capital for the
company totaling $6.3 million. The three returning investors are Psilos
Group Partners, Earlybird Ventures, and Aurora Investments. Glenn
Anschutz, CEO of OneShield, said he expects the capital infusion to fund
the company to cash-flow break-even status later this year. OneShield's
Internet-based services are designed to allow customers to reduce
expenses, gain greater underwriting control, and improve the speed to
market for new products.

o ViaCell Files for $115 Million IPO
Boston -- Seeking to capitalize on demand for stem cells used in the
development of new medical treatments, Boston-based ViaCell, a developer
of technology for producing stem cells, has filed a registration statement
with the SEC for an initial public offering to raise approximately $115
million. ViaCell's lead product candidate, a highly concentrated and
purified population of stem cells for the treatment of cancer and other
serious diseases, is currently in clinical trials. In the prospectus, the
company said it believes its technology breaks the "bottleneck" in the
supply of stem cells, thus "enabling a new paradigm in medicine." The
company's subsidiary Viacord collects, tests, processes and preserves
umbilical cord blood, allowing families to preserve the blood at birth for
potential later use in stem cell therapy.

o Lucent Tells 800 North Andover Employees They're Out on March 31
North Andover, Mass. -- The Boston Herald reported on Thursday that Lucent
Technologies has warned the 800 employees of its North Andover plant,
which is in the process of being acquired, that they their positions will
be terminated on March 31. Some of the terminated employees will likely be
hired by the plant's buyer (widely reported to be California-based
Solectron Corp.) the employees were informed. "We also expect that there
will be a number of temporary positions offered for certain transition
work for some period of time," a plant manager said in a memo to
employees, the Herald reported.

o Rhode Island Tech Council Executive Director Resigns
Providence, R.I. -- The Providence Journal reported on Thursday that the
Rhode Island Technology Council (RITEC), an association that promotes the
state's high technology industries, is in search of a new executive
director following the unexpected resignation of Rick Kovar, who led the
organization for about two years. An interim replacement is expected to by
chosen by RITEC's board of directors next month. RITEC currently has a
membership of 240 technology-related companies. The organization recently
took over management of Rhode Island's top venture capital conference.

o StorageNetworks Lands Storage Management Deal with EDS
Waltham, Mass. -- Shares in Waltham-based StorageNetworks, a provider of
data storage management software and services, rose 14% on Thursday after
an announcement that the company has been selected to provide its
technology for EDS' internal data storage management requirements around
the world. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. StorageNetworks
has been contracted to help EDS further consolidate and centrally manage
its global data storage, while increasing automation of ongoing management
tasks, the companies said. StorageNetworks' share price rose $0.59 to
$4.67 on Thursday.

o GlycoGenesys Receives $5.1 Million Investment
Boston -- On the heels of a $7.1 million private placement received in
December, Boston-based GlycoGenesys, a developer of pharmaceutical and
agricultural products, has raised an additional $5.1 million through
another private placement. San Francisco-based Shemano Group, an
investment bank, acted as the lead placement agent for GlycoGenesys, which
has a cancer treatment in Phase II human clinical trials, as well as an
anti-fungal compound in development.

o Advanced Cell Technology Inc. Reveals New Organ Cloning
Worcester, Mass. -- Several published reports have revealed that
Worcester-based Advanced Cell Technology Inc., a biotechnology company,
has performed relatively successful implants in adult cattle of organs
generated from cloned embryos. "The data looks very nice," Robert P.
Lanza, the company's vice president of medical and scientific development,
told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. "I obviously can't go into any
specifics," he said. Results of the company's work has yet to be published
in any scientific journal.

wireless network technologies, has received an order worth an estimated $2
million to provide Verizon Wireless with support to migrate its network
expansion in select market areas. The two companies have a pre-existing
relationship. Privately held, some of Paragon's other customers include
Cingular, Sprint PCS, Telcel, and Nextel.

(Boston) Boston-based Cabot Corp., a specialty chemicals and materials
manufacturer, has agreed to purchase the remaining shares from its joint
venture partner in Japan-based Showa Cabot Supermetals for about $100
million. Cabot employs about 4,200 people at 45 manufacturing plants and
offices located in 23 countries. The company's major products are carbon
black, fumed silica, inkjet colorants, and capacitor materials.

(Stamford, Conn.) Stamford-based e-Media Corp., a provider of streaming
media technologies, has sold key technology assets to New Jersey-based
Streaming Media Corp., a provider of advanced content delivery technology.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Streaming Media acquired
e-Media's technology for maintaining on-demand content, providing closed
captioning services, ad insertion tools and its web-hosting
infrastructure.
